“Pastor Jung taught us not only the Bible but many other things as well”

I was born in Seokmak-ri and entered Sunday School when I was seven years old. Back then, Teacher Jung Myung Seok, whom we called “Teacher” at the time, was a Sunday School instructor at Seokmak Church. Even though he was busy with farm work and church duties, he would personally visit each of us, take us by the hand, and warmly lead us to church to teach us the Word.

Even outdoors, Pastor Jung Myung Seok taught us God’s Word often. Personally, he was a very affectionate and kind person, always setting a good example. He was an excellent teacher and a leader in the church.

Since we were young then, we were innocent and playful—real rascals. We would grab Pastor Jung’s clothes, hold his hands, and even block his way in front.

In situations where he could have been annoyed or upset, Pastor Jung instead cared for the Sunday School children with a smile and generosity. He had a bright and innocent face, completely free of any malice, and the townspeople often praised him as someone who could live without a single law to restrain him.

Once, Pastor Jung tied handkerchiefs to the wrists of the children so they could wipe their noses. At that time, handkerchiefs were precious, but somehow he had gotten them for us. He even taught us how to use the handkerchiefs, how to wash our hair, wash our feet, dress ourselves, and other everyday habits. He was a very warm and caring person, as I remember him.

Pastor Jung taught us not only the Bible but many other things as well.

He would say:
“In the future, when you go out into the world, whether you go to middle school, high school, or start working, you must have great dreams and hopes. Always keep books close to you and work hard for your self-development.

But never forget God. Value God’s Word above all else and build good relationships with everyone around you. Such a person can become the most admirable person in the world. You could become a civil servant or succeed in many ways. But wherever you are, living with God at the center of your life is the most valuable way to live.”
