I am Deacon Kim Joo-hyung from CGM. I first began listening to the Word in 1984, when I was a freshman at Korea University. I felt a profound sense of emptiness in life. Thinking, “Oh! I really want to die,” I heard a sermon, and it struck me that life is valuable and that the sermon was precious. It made me realize the value of life again.
I also work at a welfare center for people with disabilities. I thought, “Even if things are difficult, I should wait patiently for each person and treat them with kindness.” When I approached them with that mindset, I saw them begin to change in positive ways, and that made me happy as well.
Back then, we called Pastor Jung “Teacher.” I often wondered, “What kind of person is he, who delivers such valuable words?” So when he was developing Wolmyeongdong, I visited there.
It was early in the new year, and many people were gathered. I saw him personally serving rice cake soup to everyone, one by one. I thought, “It must be tiring to serve so many people,” yet he continued until the very last person. Seeing that made me feel a sense of closeness.
I was moved to realize that he is not only someone who speaks, but also someone who shows care in action. Watching him look after people warmly made me think, “I should also take care of each person with that kind of heart.
